Christian Quarles VP Metro Global Marketing

Christian Quarles has been appointed Vice President Global Marketing for Metro International. The role is a new role at Metro International and follows a decision to increase marketing activities in the global space.

Quarles’ latest role at Metro combined responsibilities for Global Marketing with holding the Marketing Director position for Metro Sweden.Quarles has a long career in marketing within the media sector. Previously to joining Metro in 2004 he worked at Aftonbladet, MTG and Beiersdorf.

DNews founders Cipriani leave paper

dnews2008Antonio and Gianni Cipriani, founders of Italian free daily DNews, have suddenly left the paper. According to Italian sources (Iris Press, Il Salvagente), publisher Mario Farina wanted to get rid of the brothers because they advocated a more critical style of the papers.

In 2004, the Cipriani brothers also were involved in the launch of another free daily: E Polis, but left after quarrels with the new management to start DNews in 2008.

DNews has editions in Rome, Milan, Bergamo and Verona, and prints around 500,000 copies daily.

New Board Directors for Metro

Metro International S.A. (Metro) today announced that the Nomination Committee has proposed the re-election of Mia Brunell Livfors, Didier Breton, Nigel Cooper, Erik Mitteregger, Mario Queiroz, and Cristina Stenbeck as Board Directors. The Nomination Committee also proposed the election of Michelle Guthrie and Patrick Ståhle as new Board Directors. The Nomination Committee proposed the re-election of Mia Brunell Livfors as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Henry Guy has informed the Nomination Committee of his wish not to seek re-election at the Annual General Meeting on 27 May 2010.
Michelle Guthrie is Chairman of Plan International Hong Kong, a global aid agency working on behalf of children in developing countries. Michelle Guthrie was Managing Director and Senior Adviser of Providence Equity Partners, the world’s leading private equity firm focused on media, entertainment, communications and technology from 2007 to 2010. Mrs. Guthrie began her career at STAR, a media and entertainment company in Asia wholly owned by News Corporation, where she held a number of key executive positions since 2001, finally as CEO from 2003 to 2007. Prior to this, Mrs. Guthrie was Director of Legal and Business Development at FOXTEL in Australia. She began her career within media at BSkyB in the UK. Earlier in her career Ms Guthrie was a lawyer at Allen, Allen & Hemsley in Australia and Singapore.
Patrick Ståhle is a Board Director of Charm Communication Ltd, a TV advertising service provider in China and one of the biggest brokers to China Central TV. Mr. Ståhle works part-time with Aegis Media Global Solutions which involves oversight of global strategy, product development and work within Aegis’ Executive Committee. He was until 1 April 2010 the Singapore based Chairman and CEO for Aegis Media APAC, part of the media and market research network Aegis Plc, listed on the London Stock Exchange. Mr. Ståhle worked for Aegis Media for more than 10 years; as COO Carat Scandinavia, CEO Carat Sweden and CEO Aegis Media Nordic. Prior to this, Mr Ståhle launched and managed Canal+ pay-TV channels in the Nordic region along with an e-learning start-up called KWorld. Over the years Mr. Ståhle has been an active Board Director on several small and medium sized Companies including several start-ups, focused on publishing, internet and marketing.

Philippe Favre new editor of Swiss 20 Minutes

Philippe Favre is the successor as editor of Swiss French language of 20 Minutes of Tristan Cerf (see previous post).

Favre was already editor in chief before the merger with Le Matin Bleu in 2009 when Tristan Cerf took over.

Editor in chief Tristan Cerf will move from free daily 20 Minutes (published in the western French part of Switzerland) to paid Sunday paper Le Matin Dimanche.

Cerf was formerly editor of free daily Matin Bleu but became editor on 20 Minutes in 2009 after the publishers of both competing free dailies decided to merge the titles. (Persoenlich)

Metro has 1.2 million daily metropolitan readers across Mexico, Brazil, Chile and Ecuador.

Former AOL executive Jim Davidson has been appointed as president of the Examiner.com network of local-news-and-blogs websites. Philip Anschutz’s Clarity Media also operates free daily Examiner newspapers in San Francisco and Washington.

Davidson was a consultant to Examiner.com since summer 2009, and advised it on its acquisition of Canada’s NowPublic last September. Previously he was vice president of web services and publishing for AOL, where he worked on its Digital City local-content network. (MoneyCentral)

Pablo Mazzei Executive Vice President Metro Latin America

Pablo Mazzei, Regional Director for Metro’s operations in Latin American and Managing Director for Chile, has been appointed Executive Vice President with responsibility for Metro Latin America. Mr. Mazzei will continue to be Managing Director for Chile and take part in the six-person strong Executive Management team. (Metro International press release)

Metro has operations in Chile (fully owned), Brazil, Ecuador and Mexico (all three minority owned).

Changes at 24timer

Susanne Sayers will be the new “editor responsible for 24timer” according to Danish media website MediaWatch.

She replaces the former ‘editor-in-chief’ of the free daily, Claus Johansen (see previous post).

24timer is owned by the Danish MetroXpress free daily.
