Free circulation drops in Portugal

Free papers were introduced in Portugal in 2004 when both Destak and Metro were launched. In 2006 economic free daily OJE joined.

Those three papers are still around, although with less than half of the circulation (160,000) of 2006 (340,000).

Four more titles were introduced in 2007. Circulation increased to 650,000. Diário Desportivo lasted less than a year. Meia Hora closed in 2009, Global Notícias in 2010 while local Maidera paper Diario Cidade went digital 2011.

Both Metro and Destak are now both owned by Cofina.
