The latest Roy Morgan data for newspaper readership in Australia showed that free dailies are still marginal in readership compared to paid newspapers.
Leading papers The Herald Sun, the Daily Telegraph, the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, however, lost readers in the last five years.
Free mX in Melbourne shows a small growth over the last five years, the Sydney edition increased every year in readership while mX Brisbane lost some readers for the first time in 2010.
mX’s publisher, News Ltd., however, disputes the data because of the small sample size and the methods used. mX also uses Panorama research, showing a total readership of 743,000 (more than twice as much as the Roy Morgan survey).
