Dutch frees lose readers

All three Dutch free newspapers lost readers in the last (2009/2010) NOM Print Monitor research.

Metro is still the second best-read newspaper after paid paper De Telegraaf with a reach of 12.6% (1.7 million readers), Spits is third (11.7% reach, 1.6 million readers) while De Pers is 6th (after AD and Volkskrant) with a reach of 4.8% and 664,000 daily readers.

De Telegraaf gained some readers, AD slowed a slow decline while Volkskrant and NRC were stable.

The decline of readership of free newspapers is party explained by the lower circulation of the papers. But also other reading habits – more use of smart phones in public transport – could be an explanation.
