RedEye increases circulation

redeye2008RedEye, the free daily by the Tribune Company (Chicago Tribune) plans to increase its circulation from 200,000 to 250,000 a day on January 4. Distribution will also expand to campuses of about 30 colleges. (free-daily.com)

The paper was launched as a free/paid product in 2002 with a circulation of 80,000 in the first years. In 2005 it went all-free after competitor RedStreak (by Chicago Sun) closed down.

In 2007 circulation was increased from 150,000 to 200,000 while also a weekend edition was added.

The Chicago Tribune itself is heavy in debt and has filed for bankruptcy protection in 2008.
