Free dailies 1995 – 2009

titles19952009The number of free dailies increased every year until 2007 when it reached 231 at the end of the year. In 2008 the number was was stable (229) but in the first 11 months of 2009 it dropped with 10% to 209 (click on picture for bigger version).

In Europe the decline started already in 2008, while in the America’s the number of titles is stable, although there is an increase in Latin America and a decline in the US.

In Asia there is a small decline when 2008 and 2009 are compared.

The numbers reflect the situation at the end of the year. The total number of free dailies in 2009 is 240, but 31 of those have already closed down.

The table begins in 1995 (birth of Metro In Sweden) although some free dailies launched before that. The first commuter free daily in the America’s dates from 1999 (Argentina) while in Singapore free commuter dailies started in 2000 so the table starts in those years for those continents. But also in Brazil (1974), Asia (Japan), Australia (1906) and Africa (Botswana) free dailies started before those years.
