Spanish frees down in readership

20 Minutos, for several years the best-read Spanish newspaper, lost its leading position to paid sports paper Marca in the last AIMC readership survey (October 2008 – May 2009).

20 Minutos now has 2,527,000 daily readers, against 2,767,000 readers for Marca. In the previous period (April 2008 – March 2009) 20 Minutos was leading with 2,772,000 readers – Marca had 2,749,000 readers.

Paid paper El Paìs is third with 2,101,000 readers (2,182,000 in previous period).

Also other free dailies lost readers, probably a result of the cuts in circulation and closed down editions.

Qué! went down from 2,116,000 to 1,885,000;  ADN now has 1,495,000 against 1,671,000 in the previous period. These papers are still 4th and 5th in Spain, before El Mundo.

20 Minutos is now the 9th news portal in Spain (11th in the previous period) with 871,000 monthly unique visitors, up from 810,000 in the previous period. Not all Spanish news sites, however, are covered by the research.
