More local closures in Spain

Apart from the closure of Mini Diario in Valencia and Alicante (see yesterdays’ post) several other free local papers have closed down in Spain, in this case in Catalonia.

Free daily Aquí in Tarragona, launched in September 2006 by Editorial Baix Camp SL, closed down at the end of February this year. It had a circulation of 20,000.

Furthermore, only one of the editions of the Més-group of local free dailies has survived, all others have been converted to weeklies or stopped publishing.

The remaining daily title is Més Tarragona, Reus i Costa Daurada (left), a merger of the former Més dailies in Tarragona, Costa Daurada and Reus. This merger probably already took place in 2008. Earlier editions in La Marxa, Manresa, Sant Cugat, Pamplona, Maresme, Terrassa, Sabadell, L’Hospitalet, Cornellà and Ebre were closed down. Circulation of the remaining title is around 25,000.

Total circulation of free dailies in Spain has dropped to 2.5 million (4.9 million in 2006).
