London’s 5th free

Tonight I was handed London’s 5th free daily: The ‘new’ Evening Standard. At the tube stations along Regent and Oxford Street I passed they were handed out to the public.

The ‘bulk’ circulation of the Evening Standard has been classified as ‘hospitality’ copies distributed to airlines and to hotels. This might be true to some extend but many copies were just handed out for free tonight to anyone who would pick up one, no questions asked, no marketing, no subscriptions, no coupons, just for free.

The business model behind this actually puzzled me as the Standard never was too much interested in readership, only in circulation.
