The .ch closure

During the afternoon of the last day of Swiss free daily .ch an official notice was posted on the paper’s website. The “very difficult economic environment” and “uncertainty about the future” were given as main reasons for the move. The management did not expect the paper would be profitable by the end of 2011 as was planned.

In Persoenlich the owners say that readership of the paper was developing like expected but although the advertising was growing too, the increase was not enough for the paper. For 2010 it was expected that the advertising market would not improve enough for .ch.

The owners of the paper were hoping for the second place in readership after undisputed leader 20 Minuten, as a mature market should be able to support two free newspaper, but in a recession even the second place would not bring enough revenues.

In fact, the market in Switzerland had four instead of two free papers, which made the task even more difficult.

The current management (or anybody else) can get the paper for nothing, “not even a symbolic frank” according to the owners.
