Last issue of .ch today

Swiss free daily .ch has printed its last edition today (left). Director Caroline Thoma and editor Rolf Heeb were fully taken by surprise according to Persoenlich.

In the crowded Swiss free paper market the investors saw no chance of profits in the near future. Apart from market leader 20 Minuten, also ’spoiler’ News (by 20 Minuten owner Tamedia) and free evening paper Blick am Abend (by Ringier) are on the market.

Plans to cut down circulation to only one or three days a week had been made but not put into practise. Last year .ch changed its design and target group, and abolished home delivery. Readership has gone up since then but apparently not enough. The economic crisis meant the last blow for the independent paper.

With the closure, the future of News is also not certain as this paper was mainly launched to spoil the market for .ch when it launched in September 2007.

Almost 70 people will lose their job with the closure. The circulation of .ch was 370,000 in 2008. Total Swiss free circulation is now 1.6 million. At the end of 2006 it was 2.1 million. In March free business paper CASH closed down.
