Free weekly Sport (Paris, London) closed

Not only free and paid daily newspapers suffer from the crisis, also free weekly Sports – heralded as one of the most promising innovations in magazines (see previous post) – took a hit.

First the Paris edition closed down (last issue April 3), after which also the London edition ended publication in the same week (last issue on the right). The London edition started in 2006, 24 people lost their job. The London website contained a press release on the closure:

It’s with a great deal of sadness that we have to announce that Sport is suspending operations after its French parent company went into administration. We are hoping to carry on the magazine and are currently looking for further funding.

In Paris – launched in 2003 – the circulation was half a million, in London is was around 320,000.
