20 Minutos editor cuts own salary

Arsenio Escolar, editor in chief of leading Spanish free daily 20 Minutos, has cut his own salary – and those of other executives – with 10% to cope with the economic crisis that is hurting his paper.

Earlier dozens of employees were let go, while circulation and the number of pages printed were cut back. Also the 20 Minutos Digital School of Journalism was closed down. (Editors Weblog)

Escolar wrote on his own blog that if the Spanish government is thinking about helping newspapers in this recession, they should include paid and free dailies.

The plans of 20 Minutos to launch a paid newspaper – a project started two years ago – has been put on ice. The idea was to make a paid paper for the substantial group of readers created by the free dailies.
