Turkey’s free Gaste closed down

The last issue of free daily Gaste, launched in Istanbul a little more than a year ago – on 11 February 2008 – was published on 19 February (see previous post).

On the front page of the last issue (right) the economic situation in Turkey was said to be responsible for the closure. Also it was suggested that the closure might be temporary.

The paper had an (unaudited) circulation of 300,000 according to the publisher. (see previous post)

Also in February 2008, a competitor of Gaste, 20dk was launched by the Dogan Group, also publisher of paid papers Hürriyet, Milliyet and Posta. 20dk is still around, probably facing the same financial problems, but being part of a much bigger media group, is of course easier.

In December the publisher of Gaste even launched a Monthly magazine as well (see previous post).
