Article on Italian free & paid papers

In the Winter 2008 issue (8, 2) of Swiss academic journal Studies in Communication Sciences (SCOMS) an article by Frank Habann, Heinz-Werner Nienstedt & Nina Rothhaas is published about readers’ attitudes to free and paid newspapers.

In Free Sheet Newspapers versus Traditional Daily Newspapers: Competing or Complementary? An Empirical Comparison of their Gratifications to Readers a sample of Italian students was interviewed on their attitudes towards free and paid dailies. The authors conclude that cannibalization between the two sorts of papers is not very likely as they perform different functions and have a different image for readers.

Paid papers perform better for information and opinion forming, free papers are seen as more entertaining. The full article can be requested by clicking on the link of the title.
