Tamedia profits thanks to free dailies

Martin Kall, Chairman of the Board of Swiss publisher Tamedia said in his “Dreik√∂nigstagung” (Epiphany speech) Tuesday that the profits of Tamedia have grown substantially thanks to expansion into other (mainly print) areas.

Ten years ago the company published three papers, now this has grown to almost 20. Important in this respect are free dailies 20 Minuten/Minutes and News according to Krall. Printing free dailies means also that printing presses can be used more efficiently, which in turn is beneficial for the other papers. (Klein Report)

That 20 Minuten/Minutes is making a profit is no surprise, but that News – only launched in December 2007 – is making a profit is not very likely.
