Lay-offs at Metro Halifax (Canada)

Four people have lost their job at the smallest Metro edition in Canada: Halifax, launched in February of this year after paid paper The Daily News folded. Circulation in Halifax is 30,000.

Metro Halifax is published by Transcontinental, Metro International and Torstar Corp. Publisher Greg Lutes said two reporters, one sales staff and one marketing person were laid off, which was “part of a re-organization of Metro in Canada.” “Local (advertising) is not the issue,” Mr. Lutes told the Chronicle Herald, “It’s national.”

Mr. Lutes said he felt “confident” there would not be any more layoffs at the Halifax operation. Metro Halifax now has five people working in its newsroom.

In total Metro Canada publishes seven editions with a joint circulation of more than 800,000.
