Qué! about to shut down four editions

Spanish free daily Qué! is closing the editions in A Coruña, Bilbao, Mallorca and Murcia.

Publisher Vocento is asking the Ministry of Labor for a special ERE (Expediente de Regulación de Empleo) provision (because of economic reasons) to lay off (or suspend work for) 106 workers, 40% of the total workforce.

Except for the people working in the closed editions, also a dozen staff members working in the headquarters will be affected.

The closure of the A Coruña could be avoided if the edition would merge with the other Galician edition in Vigo.

The alternative for the Bilbao edition would be a merger with local free paper El Nervión, also owned by Vocento. In Bilbao Vocento is publishing paid paper El Coreo. (La Voz de Galicia)

Qué was launched in January 2005 by the Recoletos group with 12 editions: Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia, Malaga, Zaragoza, La Coruna, Alicante, Mallorca, Oviedo (Asturias), Vigo and Sevilla. In 2007, the year that the company was sold to Vocento for €132m (see previous post), four editions were added: Murcia, Cartagena, San Sebastian (Guipúzcoa) and Santander (Cantabria). The strategy of Vocento seemed to be to launch editions in every city were they operated a paid newspaper. Vocento also owns national paper ABC.

Qué! was the third national free paper in Spain after 20 Minutos and Metro. In 2006 a fourth national paper was published: ADN (Planeta). In circulation all national papers distributed around 950,000 copies (Metro a 100,000 less). The circulation of the four editions involved is around 120,000.

In readership Qué! is second after 20 Minutos, with 2.2 million daily readers.

The economic crisis which started already early this year in Spain has affected the newspapers very much. All papers have cut down circulation (see previous post) while ADN also is planning to close editions (see previous post).
