Time to kill? Read a free daily

In his MA-thesis “New Paper Reading: The Explaining Factors of Newspaper Reading of Young Adults”, media psychologist Herman Wolswinkel asked young people why they read a (free) newspaper. Reasons to read paid papers differ from reasons to read a free newspaper.

Wolswinkel interviewed 245 young people and concludes that young people will be very hard to reach by paid newspapers. If they read, they mainly read free dailies, but not because they are very interested in ‘news’.

Free dailies are mainly read to “kill some time”, readers of paid papers on the contrary “make time” to read a newspaper. (Adformatie)
