Metro strengthens position in Czech Republic

With 462,000 daily readers in the 2nd and 3rd quarter of 2008, Metro is the fastest growing paper in readership (+40%) in the Czech Republic compared to the same period last year according to Media Projekt (GfK). In 2007 Metro was very much affected by heavy competition and had ‘only’ 331,000 readers. (click on graph for bigger picture)

In the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008 Metro already increased readership, in the first two quarters of 2008 readership was 435,000.

The only remaining free competitor of Metro, 24 Hodin also increased readership compared to 2007 (from 181,000 to 199,000) but lost compared to the first two quarters of 2008 when readership was 208,000. In December 24 Hodin will close down.

With 462,000 readers Metro is fourth in the Czech Republic. Best-read is Blesk (1,460,000), followed by Deník Česká Republika, a chain of local paid papers (1,1800) and Mladá fronta DNES (1,066,000). All three paid papers lost readership compared to 2007.
