Integrated newsroom questioned

Frédéric Filloux, formerly working for free daily 20 Minutes France, and now employed by 20 Minutes owner Schibsted, questions on his Monday Note blog the ‘Integrated Newsroom’ model:

Let’s kill a myth. The dream of a compact newsroom, able to output a high-intensity general news website doesn’t fly. Numbers simply don’t add up. And here is why.

Filloux, whom I hope to talk to later today on the Free Papers Conference in Madrid, mainly questions the expected online revenues, and does a lot of (depressing but fair) calculations on his blog.

The bottom line is that online readers bring in too little money, while the cost of news is still rather high. Read it!
