Österreich offers new subscribers €100 cash

Free/paid Austria daily Österreich always was famous for its gifts to new subscribers: iPods, coffee machines, free highway vouchers. The latest offer even involves a cash refund.

New subscribers who sign up for at least a yearly subscription receive €100,- in cash on their bank account.

As a subscription costs just over €170,- this lowers the price to €70,- meaning that subscribers get a paper home delivered six days a week for 23 cents a day. I read the small print several times but could not find the catch.

According to Österreich total circulation is 304,000. The latest OAK audit, however, includes only paid circulation (130,000) and ‘paid’ circulation including bulk-sales (167,000). As bulk indicates free in this case, total free circulation must be around 175,000.
