Examiner circulation examined

Free US daily The Examiner introduced a totally new distribution model last week with home delivery on Thursdays and Sundays, only rack-distribution on weekdays and skipping the Saturday edition.

There is probably no newspaper that prints such different numbers of copies on different days: 835,000 on Sundays, 735,000 on Thursday and only 230,000 on Monday-Wednesday and Friday (and none on Saturdays).

In Washington the average circulation is now 155,000, in Baltimore 132,000 and in San Francisco 128,000. Only in Washington Thursday circulation is higher than Sunday circulation. (Denver Business Journal)

These new average circulation figures actually mean that the circulation of Philip Anschutz’ paper has gone down dramatically.

Before the switch the paper distributed more than 700,000 copies daily, meaning a 40% decrease in average circulation.
