Closures roundup
Of the more than 320 free newspapers launched so far, 81 (25%) have been closed down already.
The two periods with the highest number of closures coincide with economic recessions: 2001/2002 and 2006/2007. The outlook for 2008 seems to be somewhat better as there have been only 6 closures in the first half-year.
In 2006 and 2007 the difference between closed down titles and editions was much higher than in previous years, indicating that also bigger titles were closed down while others just closed down editions. (The new graph is also on the Graphs & Stats page.)
