De Pers owner buys 5% of Telegraaf

Marcel Boekhoorn, one of the richest people in the Netherlands and owner of free daily De Pers, acquired a 5% stake in Telegraaf Media Group (TMG), one of the leading publishers in the Netherlands.

TMG publishes De Telegraaf, a popular broadsheet with the highest circulation in the Netherlands, local newspapers, free daily Spits and free local weekly papers. The group also publishes magazines and has a majority stake in Sky Radio in the Netherlands.

Boekhoorn thinks that TMG under-performs and that the profits of the group can be improved.

What this means for both free papers involved is not clear. In the past Boekhoorn already talked with De Telegraaf about selling De Pers to them. But also cooperation like in Sweden or Denmark, were Metro partnered with competitors, could be an option.
