German Post angers publishers

German magazine publishers think it is a ’scandal’ that the German Post has plans to launch their own free weekly magazine. The new title would distributed in several million copies directly to households and contain national advertising as well.

The magazine publishers’ organization Verbands Deutscher Zeitschriftenverleger (VDZ) will use every ‘political and legal’ way to prevent the launch of this free magazine. Also it is thinking about starting its own delivery service for magazines.

Deutsche Post already distributes Einkauf Aktuell, a free advertising weekly with a circulation of 17 million. The new weekly will also contain news so it can be distributed also to households that don’t want advertising in their mailbox.

The news items will be provided by Klaus Madzia, formerly responsible for the Holtzbrinck cheap daily Extra and its free successor Business News. Earlier (see previous post) Deutsche Post also had plans for launching a free daily. (FT Deutschland)
