2008 news and 2007 clean up
2008 is going to be the year of truth for many free dailies. The second wave of launches begun after the 2001-2003 recession in 2004, meaning that those papers now passed the critical three year period. With the economy still growing in most countries and newspapers still offering good advertising opportunities, the outlook is not gloomy. But growth was already slow in 2007 while in 2008 not much more is expected.
Most European countries have entered a phase of heavy competition with three or even more titles in many markets. If there is growth, Western Europe is probably not the place to look for it, some decline is even more likely. Except of course if there will be a launch in Germany.
In this first week I will also blog on left-overs from last year, mostly on some research reports and articles that took some time to read. (And of course: a happy 2008 to all readers, and thanks for the cards, the e-cards, the coffee cup, the goat (!) and the e-mails.)
