Metro NY won’t run anti-Bush ad
Free daily Metro in New York refused to run a back page ad by the anti-Bush movement the World Can’t Wait (Drive out the Bush Regime). The ad was scheduled to run Thursday September 21, but was not acceptable according to Metro because it was “too inflammatory”. Next day, a second ad, headlined “One Million Dead in Iraq” was also rejected. Later Metro said it would run the ad at a price almost four times higher than what was originally agreed upon.
According to Debra Sweet, director of the World Can’t Wait, the decision by Metro is the result of a campaign by the Bush government to create a “watch what you say” atmosphere. The Senate already passed a resolution targetting another anti-Bush organization: MoveOne. MoveOne placed an ad in The New York Times titled “General Betray-Us”. Republican senators have criticized the New York Times’ discount system for running these non-commercial ads.
