Netherlands: anti-freebie Berliner
Dutch financial newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad converted to Berliner yesterday. On top of that, the whole design, the colour (now pink) and the editorial organization was changed. One of the reasons is the fear for a new free financial paper that was ‘though about’ by Metro Holland. Although it could very well be that Metro never really planned this new paper. Dutch free daily De Pers is planning a Saturday edition, also in Berliner, while leading quality paper De Volkskrant has been dreaming about converting to Berliner for some time. Ironic is that the new financial Berliner will be printed by drukkerij Dijkman, formerly the commercial branch of the communist party in the Netherlands.

Free Daily De Pers apparently has already produced a dummy of their free business paper De Financiele Pers. Het Financieele Dagblad was not interested in operating a new free financial daily in cooperation with De Pers.

After the tabloid-boom Berliner seems to become a new topic in the newspaper world. Understandable because you can create books instead of one pile of paper containing pullouts. But It is a misunderstanding that FD. converted to Berliner. Berliner is (according to The printer’s terms/Grafisch zakboek) 34 x 48 cm.
The so-called Schweizer format is 33 x 49 cm.
FD. is not a Berliner! Just broadsheet with 3.7 cm cut off.
