Update: Japan
Missed so far on the map of free dailies was Japan. In 2002 a free daily was briefly published in Tokio, but Headline Today soon reverted to a weekly. But apparently there is another free daily published in one of the largest newspaper markets of the world. World Press Trends had the title but no details. A reader from Japan provided the details on the paper. In the northern part of the country, in Kitami city on the island of Hokkaido, Keizai no Densho-bato started in 1983 as a free weekly. It changed to a daily in 1987 and is published six days a week (Mon – Sat). It has an ABC audited circulation of 85,000 – reaching almost 90 percent of the population in that area. The evening paper is home delivered. Kitami is known for its peppermint production while the island of Hokkaido is mostly known for Olympic city Sapporo.
