Update: Dominican Republic
Overlooked so far in the free dailies overview was the Dominican Republic. But actually this country has a rich history of free dailies, already starting in 2001. In that year Diario Libre started in Santa Domingo with a circulation of just over 100,000. The paper is now also distributed in 120,000 copies, also in other areas, six days a week. Publisher is Omnimedia. The same year one new free daily, El Expreso, was launched, while paid evening paper Ultima Hora was converted into a free daily. Following a financial scandal in 2003 these last titles probably folded, their websites are no longer online.

A fourth free daily Al Día, was launched in March 2002. This paper by Corripio, also publisher of the paid dailies Hoy and El National, is still published in the Capital Santa Domingo. Circulation is 110,000.
