Free South African daily in June? [update: or now]
The Sunday Times, the best selling weekend paper in South Africa will probably launch a free daily to its weekend subscribers, according to SA-news site Business Day. The paper would compete with the Star, the Citizen and the Sowetan, papers that all target the high-end market. This and the door-to-door delivery would make the paper quite an unique product compared to other free dailies. Launch date would be June of this year (see also previous post).
Inhabitants of Johannesburg don’t have to wait that long. Today The Citizen launched their free 16-page Citizen Metro in cooperation with Johannesburg transport company Metrobus. Initial circulation is 45,000. Citizen Metro is the first African free daily.
