The Netherlands: De Pers launched

Third national Dutch free daily De Pers, launched today, Tuesday 23 January, with an initial circulation of 250,000 and moving to 400,000 this month. Before this summer 500,000 are expected to be distributed while the final circulation of 800,00 must be realized before the end of the year. De Pers expects to attract more than 3 million daily readers eventually. Both other free dailies in the Netherlands Metro and Spits already have a combined circulation of almost one million. The paid paper with the highest circulation (700,000) in the Netherlands is De Telegraaf.

Meanwhile the owner of De Pers is about to sue publisher PCM (Volkskrant, NRC, Trouw, AD) because the publishers went back on the deal to print and distribute De Pers. Also Ben Rogmans, the chief editor of the paper is going to court. He will appeal the decision that keeps him from working for the paper until September of this year. This was the result of a lawsuit by Rogman’s former employer: publisher Wegener.
